Tim Burton Takes Over the Neon Museum with “Lost Vegas”

Fans of movies like Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice and The Nightmare Before Christmas will immediately recognize Burton’s signature imagery, which is more about style than specific characters. The one exception is Mars Attacks!, with a few scenes from the Vegas-centric 1996 spoof on display — including a trio of martians in combat and a tribute to the old Landmark hotel, which was famously imploded during the shooting of the film.

The Neon Museum is known as a retirement home of sorts for vintage Vegas signs and marquees, and most of the “Lost Vegas” sculptures are actually mixed in with the original installation. Some pieces are more noticeable than others and in a few cases, you need to look carefully for these “easter eggs” among the classic neon. You’ll also see examples of digital animation. There’s even a “karaoke room” where you can sing along (or lip sync) to popular songs while your lips are superimposed on a cartoon character.

The art is best enjoyed without too much given away in advance. Just know the imagery is dark and even a little violent at times. But it’s a captivating display of creativity by Tim Burton, an artist who has spent his entire career pushing boundaries.

Make a detour Downtown and check out “Lost Vegas” and the art of Tim Burton during your next visit to Las Vegas. VegasGiant will secure tickets and arrange luxury ground transportation from the Strip. It’s the perfect way to experience the history of Las Vegas and the imagination of Tim Burton in one place.
